Thank you to a truly fantastic team

Andrew George writes, "I’m so sorry our hopes and aspirations have been thwarted. National forces beyond our control overwhelmed us. It’ll be a long way back, but we must do it. Thank you to a truly fantastic team of enthusiastic and energetic supporters who invigorated and motivated me."

Green Hero Andrew!

Green Liberal Democrats are featuring Andrew George as one of their Green Heroes for, amongst other things, his work on setting high standards for insulation and environmental qualities of new build housing and starting the first community-led badger vaccine programme to combat bovine TB.

Friends of the Earth recently scored the party manifestos for their capacity to fight the Climate catastrophe and Lib Dems scored 30 points against a paltry 5.5 points for the Conservative policy platform - and the Climate Catastrophe needs to be a major issue at this election.

A Citizens' Climate Assembly

The climate crisis is the most pressing issue of this election - we need to take action now, not in five years time. The Lib Dems will make sure we engage everyone on the climate debate by setting up a Citizens Climate Assembly to discuss climate issues and find consensus.

The Liberal Democrats will:

  • Establish UK and local Citizens’ Climate Assemblies to engage the public in tackling the climate emergency.

  • Create a statutory duty on all local authorities to produce a Zero Carbon Strategy, including plans for local energy, transport and land use, and devolve powers and funding to enable every council to implement it.

  • Regulate financial services to encourage green investments

Renewable energy

The world faces a huge threat in the form of the climate crisis. The Lib Dems will meet it head-on with £12bn worth of investment in renewables to transform the UK into a green economy and a world-leader in clean energy. The Lib Dems will deliver real change on the climate crisis - vote for Andrew George on December 12th

The Liberal Democrats will:

  • Support investment and innovation in cutting-edge energy technologies

  • Expand community and decentralised energy

  • Ban fracking because of its negative impacts on climate change and the local environment

Schools that prepare children for life

OFSTED is unfair on teachers and students and doesn't take wellbeing into account in its inspections. This needs to change - the Lib Dems recognise that a good school isn't all about grades. There's so much more that's important that just isn't being looked at.

The Liberal Democrats will:

  • Replace Ofsted with a new HM Inspector of Schools, to consider a broader range of factors including the social and emotional development of children, and the wellbeing of staff and pupils.

  • Reverse cuts to school funding, allowing schools to employ an extra 20,000 teachers and reduce class sizes, restoring them to 2015 levels.

  • Introduce a ‘curriculum for life’, in all state-funded schools. This will include Personal, Social and Health Education, financial literacy, environmental awareness, first aid and emergency lifesaving skills, mental health education, citizenship and age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education.

Reducing Stop and Search

According to FullFact, 70% of stop and searches are unwarranted. Stop and search powers are overused by the police and woefully disproportionate. We will stop this, make people feel safer and protect our civil liberties.

The Liberal Democrats will:

  • Adopt a public health approach to the epidemic of youth violence: identifying risk factors and treating them, rather than just focusing on the symptoms.

  • Give local authorities the duty and funding to provide accommodation and support for survivors of abuse.

  • Invest £1 billion to restore community policing, enough for two new police officers in every Council ward.

Clean and Green

No one should get ill because the air they breathe is unclean, but that's exactly what's happening. The Lib Dems will legislate for every person's right to clean air and take real action on the illegal levels of pollution around the country. We all breathe the same air - when it's clean, we all benefit.

A Liberal Democrat government would pass a Clean Air Act, based on World Health Organisation guidelines, enforced by a new Air Quality Agency. The Act will enshrine the legal right to unpolluted air wherever you live.

Our Clean and Green plan also includes:

  • Extending Ultra-Low Emission Zones to ten more towns and cities

  • Supporting innovation in zero-emission technologies

  • Opposing any expansion of Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted and any new airport in the Thames Estuary
