Madie Parkinson-Evans Selected to fight St Ives Town Council by-election

Well-known local business-woman and experienced councillor, Madie Parkinson Evans, has been selected to fight the St Ives West Town Council by-election for the Lib Dems.

Madie has worked and lived in St Ives for 17 years, and in West Penwith for nearly 30. She has a strong track record as a campaigner, and is a committed advocate of St Ives’ cultural heritage, volunteering at St Ives Museum and St Ives Archive.

She said, “I’m thrilled to have been selected to contest this seat and have already spoken to lots of local residents on the doorsteps together with Councillor Paul Kennedy. The circumstances leading me to stand for election are extremely sad. Ken Messenger was a great councillor and friend to many. I am committed to working with other councillors to do justice to his legacy and to ensure his achievements are built on.””

Madie is campaigning for extra support for local businesses, for action to tackle rubbish and sewage spills, and a greater police presence in St Ives.

She said, “I welcome the ending of Police and Crime Commissioners, and hope that this will lead to more local involvement in decision-making, and the release of more funding for additional police in St Ives that we need, especially during the busy summer period.”

Local Party Chair Zach Lawlor said, “We are delighted to have Madie as our candidate in this election. She is an experienced councillor, having served as a Liberal Democrat member of East Devon District Council from 1984 to 1995. She has sat on Housing, Public Health, Environment and Planning committees, all of which are very important to St Ives. She is passionate and knowledgeable about local issues, which, together with her experience of local government, will enable her to hit the ground running once elected.”

Andrew George MP said “Madie has the energy and commitment to become a powerful and effective voice for St Ives. She knows the town well, and the challenges of running a business here. She’d be a great asset for the Town Council.”

Residents are invited to contact Madie with their questions on 07817 295705 or organiser@stiveslibdems.org.uk
